No matter how nice we try to put things, there is no denying that life is a battle. Everyday is a struggle.
However, with every struggle is a blessing. We are blessed to be alive and given the chance to make changes everyday.
People say, “live your life to the fullest”; I am here to do just that.
Hi, My name is Nadrah and this is my story.
I'm a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a cousin, a friend, a wife and a mother but most of all, I will always be a little girl at heart.
This blog is about my life and how I try to live it to the fullest while keeping it well balanced.

Slowly but Surely

My journey to a so called healthier lifestyle was put on hold in order to accommodate my hectic lifestyle juggling roles as a wife, mother, student, employee and advisor. It is true what Melissa said yesterday that there isn't such thing as a balanced lifestyle. Though it may seem easy for me, even with help and support by my family and in laws, i was really struggling and sacrificed a lot of my sleep time.
Despite thinking that I'll get back into the program after my finals, my plans were held back because i fell and not only sprained my ankle but i tore my muscle too. Along with the injury, i'm getting a very bad back pain on my lower right. It was prolly because I was trying doing almost everything using the right side of my body. To make things worse, i fell again on the same leg last Thursday night!
Not being able to work out makes me a lil bit upset. But without wasting anymore time, since the swelling has subsided (should have worn a guard earlier if I had known it would help a lot on the swelling), I decided to start with swimming since it is the lightest form of exercises. My friend, Mash came over as a form of motivation. We swam a little and chatted more. Only managed to do 5 laps but hey, at least it is something! Lets hope that i can continue with something tomorrow. Slowly but surely *wink*

Discrimination of Dogs in Children

Almost 2 years ago, an activist organized "I want to touch a dog" event with the intention to educate people about dogs as a living being. Why? Because majority muslims here in Malaysia were planted with the thought that DOG=BAD. As a result, it is either they live in fear of dogs or they end up abusing the poor creature. Although the event had mixed reviews, the idea of educating the public about dogs seem to be a good one (in my opinion).

I'm a very liberal person and is far from religious. So, I will excerpt a line from the internet, Dogs in Islam

"Traditionally, dogs have been seen as impure, and the Islamic legal tradition has developed several injunctions that warn Muslims against most contact with dogs. Unfortunately, many Muslims have used this view to justify the abuse and neglect of dogs, even though cruelty contradicts the Qur'an's view that all animals form "communities like you."

All animals are a part of Allah’s creation and belong to Allah (swt). Muslims are custodians of this beautiful planet. How we care for animals and what we use them for we will be accountable for to Allah (swt). All of creation is Muslim, submitting to Allah’s will—only man and jinn are granted a freedom of choice. So yes, even animals are Muslim.

Every animal has been created for a purpose. It is a duty upon every human being to respect Allah’s creation. If we ill treat any of His creation, we will be questioned about it on the Day of Judgment. Sa'yyidina ’Umar (ra) was very concerned about the animals during his rule as Amir or head of the Islamic empire. "

Following that, Dr. Ayoub M. Banderker (BVMCh) made a few other points to address concerns,

1. It is NOT haraam to own a dog, though it is not hygienic to keep a dog in the house.

2. It is NOT haraam to touch a dog or any other animal. If the saliva of a dog touches you or any part of your clothing, then it is required of you to wash the body part touched and the item of clothing touched by the dog’s mouth or snout.

3. It is incumbent upon all Muslims who own animals, whether for farming or work purposes or as pets, to provide adequate shelter, food, water, and, when needed, veterinary care for their animals. Arrangements must be made, if one is going to be away from home, to have one’s animals taken care of as well.

4. It is haraam to keep a dog or any other animal on a short lead for long periods without food, water, and shelter. Dogs need exercise and are social creatures who form organized “family” structures in nature. Dog owners therefore need to spend time daily with their dogs.

5. It is cruel, and therefore haraam, to keep any animal in a cage so small that it cannot behave in a natural way.

6. Fireworks cause untold suffering to most domestic animals because of their acute sense of hearing.

7. It is haraam to participate in any blood “sport,” like dog fighting and trophy hunting.

No animal has been cursed in any way. Animals are referred to in many instances in the Qu’ran. In Surah Kahf, mention is made of the companions of the Cave and their dog. (S18: 18-22) "

You must be wondering why I am talking about this. Well, my daughter is at the age where she loves to play pretend.
My Little Princess who Loves Animals
Loving animals, she will sometimes pretend to be a certain animal. From dogs to cats, from horses to chickens and lions to snakes. One day, upon seeing the bone from the chicken she just ate, being a kid with a wild imagination, Zara pretended to be dog. Instead of being explained that playing with food can be considered rude, what she got was,

"No Dog!"

"Dog=Bad!"

"You Dirty Girl"

Honestly, I was taken aback by the statements. Just because she was pretending to be a Dog. Had she pretended to be another animal, I doubt she will get that sort of remarks.  Some how or rather, I think that this is how hatred towards dogs were planted in children. That is certainly not the way I plan to teach my kid on impurity (najis).  I believe that we should empathize the poor creature. After all, the dog did not ask to be a dog. So, DOG is NOT BAD! Teaching discrimination is! Please do not take the context of my statements as me planning to teach my children to play with "Najis". I just believe that children should grow up understanding what it is all about before acting on it.

Which is why, I really don't have a problem when Zara pretending to be a Dog or even a Pig. Pretend play is an important thing in Child Development and helps them learn about how the world works.

So, if you disagree about my child pretending to be an animal that is deemed impure, don't punish her for pretending. However, if you plan explain to her about impurity and how in real life she needs to avoid touching a wet dog and its saliva or how we can't touch pig's skin, by all means, feel free to do so. If discrimination is your direction, kindly reserve your thoughts and walk away.

Thank you

Always Paraphrase to Verify

Nowadays, people love to name things after something that is totally different.

For example, a child was named after a fruit. Does Apple ring a bell?

When you say penguin, Person A can think "Animal" whilst Person B can think of "Linux".

In order to practice effective listening, it is always important to paraphrase.

Exhibit A, 2 broke friends...

Friend A: B, tomorrow is your birthday.. What would you like?

Friend B: Ice Cream Sandwich

Friend A: Ice Cream Sandwich?

Friend B: Yes!

Friend A: Are you referring to the Food
                  or my FOOT?!!!! (The android)

Friend B: LOL! Just trying my luck!

Ok, excuse my lameness... Just need to take a break from the agendas to attend...

Tiger or Lion

Please do not be fooled. Zara was only pretending to sleep so that her "Atok" will carry her like a Baby..

Spoilt brat this one... Her "Atok"'s Little Princess... not a surprise that she takes after his sense of humour...

Last few days, she walked in the room where her Atok was snoring in his sleep. She was shocked and asked her grandma and aunt, "Is that a lion or a tiger?"

😂😂😂😂😂

Everyone pretty much burst out laughing and woke the poor man up..

Yes, that is my daughter.. the cheeky one...

Michelle Obama Commencement Address at City College of New York

One of the best motivational speech ever! Although it is focused more in America, the lesson/message it brings about the misconception of privilege as an advantage and how challenges are the actual advantage is really applicable everywhere at any time for everyone.

Here are some of the Best Quotes from her speech that I love:

“If there’s anybody telling you that you’re not college material -- anyone -- I want you to brush ‘em off. Prove them wrong.”

"It's important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages."

"Always do your part to help others do the same"

How to Say It

“How to Say It” is my 4th project speech in Toastmasters. To tell you frankly, I have not thought much about what I am going to say. Then, I recalled having a blog and how I used to always have stories to tell. My last post was way back when?!!!!!! 25th June 2015?!! And that was also a post update after 6 months. Have I really gotten myself go? To be honest, I guess I kind of lost my way trying to juggling everything all at once.

A lot has changed since I first started my blog….
  1. Married
Yes, to my friend of 16 years, boyfriend of almost 8 years and husband of 4 years.
One if our so called date session that we squeezed in at Katie's Stove
  2. Mother
I have a very active toddler who is almost 3 and at a phase of learning about emotions
My Little Chica, Channeling Elsa from Frozen
  3. A Student
Currently finishing my Masters in Open University Malaysia. It offers one of the most flexible program. Despite the hectic schedule, I still opted to take 3 subjects a semester because I LOVE THE PRESSURE! Haha! Not!
One of my favorite group of people from my Business Research Methodology class last year.
  4. Co-founder of Katie’s Stove
Though my husband may be the owner and it is an expansion of my mom’s business, I’m very much involved in the managerial work; putting what I learn in class.
With Ezry's Friend who has visited the restaurant like at least 4 times.
With my Dairy God Son at the Restaurant
With Elaine.. Thanesh was the one taking the picture.
Our little team on the 29th February for a Birthday Party at the Restaurant.

    Favorite people at Katie's Stove

More favorite people at Katie's Stove!
  5. No longer as Active
Used to be able to run for miles. After my pregnancy bleed episode, I became a slug. Thankfully, I found a very supportive and positive trainer and introduced me to other positive people who does nothing but inspire and support each other. Let’s save the story for some other day.
Super motivating and supportive group of people!
Completed my First ever Trail Run Gig to start the year.
    More positive People!
  6. A member of Toastmasters
Something I really wanted to do in order to improve myself. I’ve always had problem in public speaking and leading. This is also part of the reason why I decided to blog again.
With Shanty the upcoming President of HP Toastmasters Malaysia
  7. Hijab I now don a hijab.
It is more like a step-by-step kind of thing. I did not turn a 180 and suddenly become religious or something. Personality wise, I am very much me. ;) Please do not ask me if it is permanent or not. My decision to wear “tudung” is between me and God.
**I started wearing some time in February so the pictures of me without tudung is before that.
Now, here is what didn’t change…
  1. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)
I’m still working in the same company for 7 years! Just that my role has changed. Currently the Audit and Compliance lead, BCP Champion and ERT lead for GSD Malaysia. Slightly more active in the company joining the EHS committee and soon to be the Secretary of the HP Toastmasters Club Malaysia.
  2. Parasite (Still staying with my parents)
Moved back into my parents’ house upon the arrival of my daughter. My mom doesn’t trust nurseries that she devoted her days to raising her grandchild. Now, I have moved into my in laws’ house so that my husband gets to spend more time with his family (ever since the restaurant opened in January, he sacrificed his weekends and did not get to see his family that much).
  3. Balance Life as We Call It
Yes, I am still struggling to balance life as we call it. I mean on top of the office work, balancing student life and helping out my husband in the restaurant. People normally get the weekend off but in my case, it is more like 7 days a week. Though I may seem relaxed, I am honestly exhausted and pressured. Going to work super early in the morning, coming home to attend to my daughter, brainstorming for the restaurant and waking up in the middle of the night for meetings, assignments and studies. It does take a toll. I tried to do my own laundry but could only do it at night after I’ve rested awhile and spent quality time with my daughter. Clothes only dries up in the mid-day while I’m at work and my mom will always end up helping me out because she can’t see things lying around waiting for me. She’s not only a Stepford wife but also a perfectionist. Maybe staying with the in laws will help me practice my household management since my Mother-in-law also works and will prolly come home about the same time as me.  Wish me luck!
Point No.3 of what didn’t change is prolly what this blog is going to be about. Because, as time passes by, I learned that we can’t have everything in life, my own definition of Wasatiyyah (moderation) and the goals that I have. Till next time…
